Döden Dö (Surely Die)

November 4, 2006 – August 1, 2007

The exhibition Döden dö (Surely Die) deals with death in Stockholm. Murders and executions, ghosts and spirits as well as mourning and loss and what we do to remember those who have died.

At eight in the morning of the 23 November 1910 a waiter named Johan Alfred Andersson Ander was beheaded; the first and only person to be executed by guillotine in Sweden. In front of twelve witnesses, Dalman the executioner let the blade fall in the prison yard at Långholmen.

Viktor Rolla was a circus artist and a favourite with the girls. He was only nineteen years old when he died in a display of parachute-jumping at Mosebacke in May 1890. His body was found entangled in the remains of his hot-air balloon in the waters off Ljusterö in the archipelago the next day.

Sibel played basketball in Tensta. When she collapsed and died, aged sixteen, her club decided to honour her memory with a competition: The Sibel Basket Cup. The competition keeps her memory alive and it also helps friends and relations to live through the sadness of their loss.

There is a shortage of burial grounds in Stockholm. Despite this, the demand for coffin burials has increased. Black, white, lime-green or hand-painted by the family. In this era of design, there are coffins to suit everyone's taste as well as their pocket. At the exhibition you can try designing your own grave.

Not so long ago, the ancient mummy of a child was found hidden away in the gym at the Norra Latin school; a child of 4-6 years. The mummy was presumably brought back from Egypt as a souvenir and was used as a teaching aid.

There are ghosts everywhere in Stockholm! Baron von Görtz, counsellor to King Charles XII, haunts the second floor of the City Museum, while an unhappy Sofia nurse can be seen gliding through the wards of the old maternity hospital on Södermalm. On the night before Christmas the nails and hair of the kings buried in the Riddarholm Church reputedly grow through the walls.

The exhibition has been produced in collaboration with Sveriges auktoriserade begravningsbyråer (The Swedish Association of Funeral Providers). http://www.begravningar.org/
